Review of Local Law Enforcement Cooperation with ICE @ SLO County Supervisor Meeting- TRUTH Act Report

Review of Local Law Enforcement Cooperation with ICE @ SLO County Supervisor Meeting- TRUTH Act Report

Please attend! Key Details:

  • Location: County Government Building, 1055 Monterey Street, SLO.

  • Topic: Annual TRUTH Act Report (Transparent Review of Unjust Transfers and Holds).

  • Purpose: To review the Sheriff's Office's cooperation with ICE and gather public comments.

  • Public Participation: In-person comments are accepted, with live Spanish translation; written comments can be emailed.

  • Context: Activists planned protests due to ICE agents detaining individuals at the jail lobby, pushing for more transparency and real-time data from the Sheriff's Office.

  • Where to Find More:

From Buen Vecino:

We’ve all witnessed the tragic consequences of federal immigration enforcement operations. People of color, both with and without citizenship, are being terrorized, assaulted, and disappeared by federal agents who are masked, armed, and in military gear. Children are scared of coming home from school to find their loved ones suddenly gone. Community members are forsaking work, public services, and healthcare out of fear of being targeted. Legal observers and community volunteers are being assaulted and in the worst cases, killed. Although residents are doing everything in their power to minimize the rippling effects of the federal government’s actions, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office has decided to maintain a policy of voluntarily cooperating with federal immigration authorities — without any legal requirement to do so. The TRUTH Act Forum is an opportunity to educate and enlighten the Sheriff and Supervisors of the many powerful reasons why police-ICE cooperation undermines public safety and causes harm.

The TRUTH Act Forum is scheduled for Tuesday, January 27 at 1:30pm, in the Board of Supervisors Chambers. We invite you to show up and give public comments in solidarity with all those who are impacted. We recommend that you arrive early in order to get a seat.
We have assembled a collection of SLO County TRUTH Act Forum Resources to support community members who plan to deliver comments at the TRUTH Act Forum, including:

  • Teach-Out presentations by Jehan Laner, Staff Attorney at the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, and Bruno Huizar, Supervising Policy Manager, Detention and Deportation for the California Immigrant Policy Center

  • “Toolkit for the TRUTH Act Forum” with guidelines, sample talking points, and more

  • “Resources for SLO” with links to relevant articles and studies

  • Diversity Coalition San Luis Obispo County’s excellent report "The Fabric of SLO County: Understanding the Diversity and Contributions of Our Immigrant Community"

  • Do you want to be heard, or do you want to be right?” by Dr. Marcela Nava of The University of Texas at Arlington (presented at Ventura County TRUTH Act Forum Teach-Out, but the concepts are applicable to SLO)

We are calling on Sheriff Parkinson to live up to the professed standards of his office: equality under the law, community trust, due process, and public safety; and adhere to their vision of being “the most progressive. . . leaders within the law enforcement community.” We are calling on the Sheriff to treat all people equally regardless of where they were born. Stop handing SLO County community members over to ICE!

From the County’s website:

The Annual TRUTH Act Report and community forum will be heard by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Luis Obispo on Tuesday, January 27, 2026. The meeting starts at 9:00 a.m. in the Board of Supervisors Chambers at the Katcho Achadjian Government Center, 1055 Monterey Street, San Luis Obispo, CA, 93408. The TRUTH Act Report will happen in the morning session with more specific timing determined when the agenda for that meeting is finalized.

This hearing is held pursuant to the Transparent Review of Unjust Transfers and Holds (TRUTH) Act, which requires public reporting and community input regarding local law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Live in-person Spanish translators will be made available to interpret public comments that may come in in-person.

The TRUTH Act Hearing will be broadcast on the Board of Supervisors live meeting at: https://www.slocounty.ca.gov/

Members of the public who wish to address the Board during the meeting must appear in person.

Written public comments may also be submitted by email; however, virtual public comments will not be accepted. All correspondence will be distributed to each member of the Board of Supervisors and will become part of the official record of the meeting. To submit a written public comment, email:
Boardofsups@co.slo.ca.us

To determine the specific placement of this item on the Board of Supervisors agenda and to review the TRUTH Act report, visit the County’s website at www.slocounty.ca.gov  on the Wednesday prior to the scheduled hearing date.
